The Brain Behind VeteransYard.net: Why I Built a Blueprint for Veteran Stability
by Robert R. Pierce III
Founder, VeteransYard.net
"I’m just a guy who refused to let the system win."

At 32, I'm sitting in my own house—a house I bought with a VA loan, zero down, no PMI, and a 90% disability rating that saved me thousands in funding fees. I'm retired before 33, building a business, and getting ready to bid on federal contracts. But none of that happened by accident. It happened because I broke the cycle. And now I want to show other veterans how to do the same.
The Truth No One Tells You
"Before this house, before the business, before any of it—I was facing homelessness."
I wasn't some guy with a safety net. I was living with a single mother of two kids, trying to figure out how to get back on my feet while sleeping in someone else's space, eating someone else's food, and feeling like I had nothing to offer. It wasn't charity—it was survival. And it taught me something that no military training ever could: when you hit rock bottom, you either stay there or you build your way out.
I chose to build.
I knew I wasn't going to stay in that situation forever. I knew I had more in me. I just needed a plan. So I started learning. Reading. Researching. Asking questions. Piece by piece, I figured out the VA loan. I figured out the SBA. I figured out how to start a business with nothing but a laptop and a vision.
And now I'm sitting in my own house, building a business that will outlast me.
Why I Built This
I've seen too many veterans struggle—not because they weren't capable, but because nobody showed them the path. The VA has resources. The SBA has programs. There are grants, loans, and certifications out there. But they're buried under paperwork, confusing portals, and jargon that makes you feel like you're back in basic training trying to decode a field manual.
When I started this journey, I had no connections. No trust fund. No business degree. Just a DD-214, a VA rating, and a willingness to learn. I went through the rejections, the lost paperwork, the portal errors that made me want to throw my laptop across the room. And I kept going.
"Now I want to be the map I wish I had."
What I've Learned (And What I'm Sharing)
This isn't theory. This is lived experience.
What I Did | What It Taught Me |
Faced homelessness and rebuilt | You can come back from anything if you refuse to quit |
Used my VA loan to buy a house | You can build equity—and rental income—with zero down |
Registered for SAM.gov and SBA Vet Cert | Federal contracts are real, and SDVOSB status gives you priority access |
Applied for Texas Vet HUB certification | State contracts are actively looking for service-disabled veteran businesses |
Started VeteransYard.net | Content builds credibility—and it's free to start |
I've learned that veterans have a unique advantage in business—we know operational thinking, leadership, and discipline. But we also face unique challenges: translating military skills into civilian terms, building networks from scratch, and navigating the mental health toll of transition.
The Hope: Stability in a Year
Here's what I believe: if you follow the steps I'm laying out, you can achieve stability within a year.
Phase | Goal |
Month 1-3 | Get your VA benefits sorted. Get your LLC formed. Start your SAM.gov registration. |
Month 4-6 | Apply for SBA and state certifications. Start building your online presence. |
Month 7-9 | Start bidding on small contracts. Build your network. |
Month 10-12 | Secure your first contract or rental income. Start scaling. |
This isn't a get-rich-quick scheme. It's a get-stable-for-life plan.
Why It Works
The data backs this up. Over 60% of veteran-owned businesses expect revenue to increase in the next year. Veteran-led firms retain 20% more clients once their story breaks through. And federal loans to veteran-owned small businesses increased by 14% last year alone.
The system is set up for us to win—we just have to know how to play the game.
What's Next
I'm building VeteransYard.net as a resource hub. Weekly blogs. Educational booklets. Step-by-step guides on the VA loan, SBA certification, VetHUB, and more. I'm creating the content I wish existed when I started.
Because every veteran deserves a home. Every veteran deserves a mission. Every veteran deserves a future.
"And I'm here to show them how to build it."
